Monkbridge House
MonkBridge House was built in 1864 and has been the home to a number of prominent city merchants, including a fellmonger, woolstapler, coal merchant, two Lord Mayors of York and the Clerk to the Guardians of the York Workhouse.
Between 1943 and 1962 it was St Mary’s Home for Girls before returning to private ownership. For the last 30 years it has been a guest house offering elegant and comfortable rooms for visitors to York. Our clients acquired the property and set about a bold refurbishment which resulted in a five-star Gold award from Visit England.
Works included:
- Rear zinc-clad dormer
- New plumbing and heating systems
- Structural works
- New electrical and alarm systems
- Fit-out including new kitchen and bathrooms
- MVHR system
- Tiling and decoration
- External works
- Lead roofing
Our clients, Fiona and Paul, had this to say about their experience working with us:
"We chose Phil’s firm for the refurbishment of our Victorian guest house based on a recommendation from our architect. They were a pleasure to work with, from the initial quotation meeting, through project planning, refurbishment work and completion. In spite of the fact that we added in several items during the work, we finished on-time (despite working through COVID lockdowns) and always had fully transparency of the budget. The subcontractors were excellent and worked seamlessly with Phil’s directly employed staff. Throughout the project we benefited from multiple suggestions on how to best execute the refurb, or for ideas on how to tackle problems we encountered, or the best fixtures and fittings to install. Post completion, Phil and his team have been very quick to respond to any snagging issues that inevitably arise with a project of this size. As a guest house we have had multiple trades people, e.g. joiners, plumbers, decorators, stay with us and we frequently receive comments on how well the work has been executed. We also received a five-star gold award from VisitEngland and this clearly also reflects the quality of the refurbishment that was undertaken"
